PLA strength: bending, pulling and hardness

“Strong” can mean several different things. A stiff part may snap suddenly; a part that bends easily may survive a knock.

Bending and snapping

A three-point bend test supports a defined bar at two positions and pushes between them. Record the load and deflection as it bends, then what happens at failure. That is much more useful than judging which piece feels hardest to break by hand.

Support spacing, specimen dimensions, print orientation and loading rate all belong in the method. The ASTM D790 flexural method is a useful reference, but a workshop rig must not be called standards-compliant simply because it has three contact points.

Pulling a specimen apart

A tensile test needs a defined specimen, aligned grips and measured force. Record the cross-section and where it fails: a break at a grip may tell a different story from a break in the intended narrow section.

Use the relevant method requirements, such as those covered by ASTM D638, before making a comparable tensile-strength claim. An arbitrary hook and a hanging weight are not interchangeable with that test.

Hardness is a different property

An indentation test measures resistance to a specified indenter under specified conditions. It needs the right instrument, specimen thickness, surface and hardness scale. Do not use a thin shell over sparse infill and assume the reading describes solid PLA.

A higher hardness reading is not automatically a higher tensile strength or better impact resistance. ASTM D2240 describes the durometer method and its scope.

What is published here

This page explains the separate mechanical tests. The practical print plate measures dimensions, appearance and fit; it does not provide strength results. Mechanical comparisons need their own specimens and records.

A future result should report the print direction, settings and failure behaviour alongside the number. Testing to destruction also needs suitable guarding and a safe loading arrangement.
